QuestionWe have what was a healthy Male Mulberry (we live in Salt Lake City, Utah), but now most of its leaves are curled and we noticed sap leaking from spots on the tree - spots that are dark red with no apparent hole or wound, about 4-6" diameter. At first we thought it may be because we removed a nearby dead tree trunk and a root from the mulberry was exposed for about 2 weeks, but it has been a couple of weeks since we covered it back up and gave it good water. We have seen mealybugs on the tree last year, but haven抰 noticed any this year; and also we have seen woodpeckers on the tree. If you could help us out we would really like to save the tree! Thanks.
AnswerSounds like borer damage. I would spray the areas on the trunk with an insecticide called Merit. this will kill the borer under the bark. Borers usually attack trees under stress--I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good.
