QuestionI live in the Pacific NW. In Feb 07 this 5' tree was planted in the garden of our new home. In the spring it blossomed nicely. In the late fall it lost all the leaves and then this past spring was colder than normal and just recently started to warm up. The tree has not had more that a few leaves and no blossoms. It is watered daily with good drainage. It is in full sun from 11a-8p. It has not been fertilized. I don't know what I am doing wrong. It is a centerpiece near the front door and I would hate to lose it.
AnswerI would cut back on the water--a tree needs about 1 inch of water per week--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. This is called deep watering. If you have not done so mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help hold the moisture.
A newly planted tree has a hard time the first couple of years --it is trying to grow a good root system at the same time growing enough foliage to produce food for the roots. Sounds like most of the problem is just what is called shock from the planting and the tree is getting use to its new environment.
