insects on swiss chard

Question
Last year and now again this summer, I'm finding small, black, round bugs on
the underside of my chard leaves.  The infected leaves curl up and shrivel. I
was unable to eradicate them last season..I tried Safer Insecticide, and cutting
them back to the ground but the insects kept reappearing.  I planted in a
different location this year but now they're back.  I'm not sure what they are
or how to get rid of them.  Can you help?

Answer
The bugs are most likely flea beetles, which are notorious for chewing holes in the leaves of leafy greens.  They best control is going to be liquid Sevin insecticide.  There is a waiting period before you can harvest, but not much else that you can get will control them.  Safer Soap probably will not because they are a moving target and the will fall to the ground when you treat.  The Sevin will be on the leaves when they feed and will kill them.  A couple of applications may be necessary during the growing season.  I hope this helps.  Thanks.
