Questioni saw jim hyland's answer to barb on 2/10/08 about her weeping cherry oozing sap, and i read his answer. i am having the same problem w/ my tree, only the leaves are turning brown as well....does this mean that the tree is dying from this? is there anything i shoud do? or should i just wait it out? a few years ago we had tied a string right around the trunk where it is oozing to a branch that was growing straight out so it would start to grow back down again. we noticed this year the string started to dig into the tree, and the trunk/bark was growing over it. we have since pulled out the string,,,,but now the tree looks worse and is oozing more sap...
AnswerOozing sap may be an indication of a bacterial infection, especially if it smells like alcohol and attracts bees. You can try to treat the area with a copper containing bactericide/fungicide. Hi-Yield Brand makes a product called Copper Fungicide and is available at most garden centers. You can try this and see what happens. The tree may live for years with this condition. Good Luck.
