QuestionWe recently planted (Nov. 2007) a Glory Red Maple tree in our yard in Spring Hill Fl. It was doing very well, until we noticed the leaves turning brown along the center of the leaf. We are getting plenty of water since about a month ago. Can you tell me what might be causing the leaves to turn brown? Thank you.
AnswerHey Bill
Maples are notorious for doing what your describe. The recent dry weather you have been having may be the culprit. The maples can lose many leaves due to defoliation and be OK in the short term. The tree may also be experiencing its first dose of transplant shock since you planted it, which would cause the leaves to turn brown. There are also a few fungal leaf spots that can cause the leaves to defoliate, but I doubt that is the case. I would watch the tree over the next couple of weeks and make sure that it is watered and fertilized adequately. Let me know if something changes during this time. Good luck.
