QuestionI live in Birmingham, Alabama. I purchased a large Sycamore tree from a
reputable nursery, and had it delivered last week. I put it in the ground
immediately {I had the hole and water previously prepared} A week later, the
tree is showing many yellow leaves with brown spots, and brown areas with
yellow borders on the still green leaves. The tree is planted in a sunny spot
on a hill behind the house, not very close to any other trees. Thank-you for
any help! Eileen
AnswerHi Eileen...The tree should be planted no deeper than the pot it came in so that you still see the original soil. As I am in Florida and do not know your climate, I will tell you what we do here. If there was burlap or something around the root of your tree it should be removed or uncovered at least half way down the root ball, if not more, so the the new roots can grow and take in water. As it is on a hill, especially, you should have a moat around it to catch the water before it rolls down the hill. We water 3 times a week for one month. The moat should be around the drip line of your tree and when filled with water will be about 3". Yellow leaves that quickly indicates to me not enough water.
