QuestionHi! We have a small sego palm that turns brown close to the center stem and gradually the entire branch turns brown to where they look dead. In fact I just cut 4 or 5 of these branches off. The center looks good and just put out 2 new branches that are beautiful and green. I'm afraid those will also turn brown.
I've had large sego palms before that maybe had just a few leaflets turn brown and that's all--never the entire length of the branch.
Thanks for you help! No insects seem to be on the plant and definitely not a white powdery mildew.
Again thanks!
AnswerIf the pant has been outside over the winter, they are likely to have had some cold injury. The entire frond will turn brown. This happens to mine every year. Just cut the old ones off if new growth looks good. Eventually as the plant gets older it will be able to hold the old fronds longer without turning brown. If the plant is inside, I would suggest that it is getting too much water. I hope this helps some. Good Luck. Thanks.
