QuestionI'm confused! I have two Palms, type unknown that are suffering from
yellowing, brown spots and some of the fronds are dying on one of them. I
have been told to use "Palm" fertilizer. I did one application 1 month ago. I
went to buy more and see that there are many different formulations. Also a
friend understood from a TV program that potassium is what is needed, but
there is none in the Palm fertilizer I see in the market. The palms grow in a
lawn of perennial peanut which is nitrogen fixing so I suspect they aren't in
need of that. I have some straight potassium fertilizer left over from the perennial peanut installation 4 years ago. Can you please give me directions?
I have pictures I can send. Thank you, Sue
AnswerHi Sue..don't think I answered this one as I do not know a lot about palms but this is what I found for you hope it helps... Manganese deficiency, in particular, causes new fronds to appear yellow, withered or scorched; the name for this is "frizzletop". It is a common problem for palms in south Florida and can be controlled by using manganese sulfate. It frequently occurs in palms growing in soils that are extremely alkaline, so you may also need to adjust the pH of your soil. You don't say which palm you have but this would be true for palms in general.
