QuestionQUESTION: I have a beautiful and aggresive red honeysuckle, this year it has many buds, but the leaves around the buds curl and turn yellow , the buds turn black and die no bloomsm the rest of the planr is very healthy, I have ck for insects of all kind, I cannot see anything to indicate a mite, eyc disease. What do I do.
ANSWER: Do one of two things. Get a hand lens or magnifying glass and take one of the unopened but not dead blooms and break it open. Look inside carefully for little cigar shaped and probably yellow or possible black little crawling insects. If you see these they will be thrips. You can also take a white sheet of paper and take the bloom and shake it vigorously over the white paper. The bugs will fall out and crawl very fast. Respond back with your observations. Thrips can cause bloom to dry up unopened. I await your response.

QUESTION: Upon your advise I did see cigar like "things" but only few
crawled away the rest looked dead. I also noticed many many little white specks lumped together at the base of the bloom
however, they did not move or shake out. What do I do to rid the plant of the insect? I am very very grateful for your advise and help. I will await your help...
AnswerI would trea the plant with Bayer advanced tree and shrub insecticide. The product is mixed with water and poured on the soil around the base of the plant. It is taken up systemically and will kill the bugs within a week or so. It also provides protection for up to a year. If the plant has made most of its blooms for this year already, you may not get the pretty display, but next year you should. I hope this helps.
