QuestionQUESTION: Both of my new young trees set huge crops for the first time this year. However, the fruit fell until now the plum has no fruit and the nectarine only a few fruits, and these fruits are coated with a clear jell. What is wrong with my trees? I spray weekly with Bonnell orchard spray and the leaves all look fine--no holes or anything.
Thanks for your help, cause this really has me puzzled. I have read and read online but can't seem to find anything about this.
ANSWER: Hi Tom...do not know what Bonnel orchard spray is, maybe that put a jell on things. You are loosing fruit for reason 1. fertilizers can make fruit drop. 2. overhead sprinklers can knock off fruit
3. inconsistant watering 4. poor pollination...

QUESTION: The jell is the reason I started spraying. My "fertilizer" was composted horse manure applied last winter and my soil test kit shows everything in good ranges. I don't have sprinklers. We've had 6 inches of rain this month, so the ground is in good shape and I haven't watered. As to poor pollination, well, that one I don't understand. The trees set tons of fruit. Could it do that without good pollination? The little bit of fruit still on the tree is coated with clear, sticky stuff that reminds me of jello.
AnswerTom..do you see anything coming from the trunk of the tree, could it be borers in it and it is leaking on the fruit? If so or ever you could use a sewing needle and jab the tree trunk with it and kill the borer? This could also be something we do not get here in FL as I do not know bugs in other areas could be different then here.
