Coral bark Japanese maple problem

Question
We planted a young Coral bark Japanese maple about a year and a half ago. It
has a nice full head with new growth and healthy looking leaves but his spring
the bark on the trunk turned a greyish brown and one of the branches did
also.  The branch went black in the area and produced no leaves.  I pruned
the branch but the infestation on the trunk has continued to spread rapidly.
At this point the entire truck is no longer coral. Do you have any idea of what
it could be and what I should do?

Answer
Japanese maples are bery susceptible to cold injury.  I have one that died on one side this year.  Check the trunk for splits or cracks and any other wound.  This would cause the one branch to die.  Cut off any dead wood, fertilize with an all purpose tree fertilizer and water during dry periods.  I hope you are successful in saving this tree.  Good Luck.
