banana magnolia

Question
I have 2 banana magnolias.  They both, one more severe than the other, has something green growing on the limbs and they have very few leaves.  I'm assuming it's some sort of fungus.  If so, what kind of fungus (if there are different kinds) and how do I treat it?  I'm really a novice gardener.  But I want to learn.

Answer
I would suspect the green matter to be lichens or possibly just algae. Neither of these organisms cause significant damage to trees themselves.  They are, however, an indication that the plant is under stress from drought or old age.  Fertilize the plants and make sure they are watered during periods of dry weather.  Prune out any dead and dying limbs.  This should help the plants to revive their vigor and begin to thrive again.  I hope this helps some.  Thanks.
