QuestionWe have a beautiful large red photensia (sp?) that is about 13-15 years old. It has developed spots all over the leaves which are dropping rapidly. What is this, and what do I do?
Thanks for your help,
Marilyn
AnswerI think you are referring to a photinia or red top as some call it. The condition you describe is a fungal disease called Photinia leaf spot caused by the fungus Entomosporium maculatum. This disease will cause spots on leaves with tan centers and a purple margin. The fungus can defoliate the plant if left uncontrolled. This disease has taken Photinias out of the landscape over recent years. You will need to prune the plant back and pick up all the debris under the tree as this will serve as a source of further spread of the disease. Then a fungicide treatment will need to be applied every 10-14 days for the rest of the life of this plant. Daconil or a fungicide with the active ingredient called triforine will keep the fungus in check and allow a nice plant to grow. Most of the program is best if started in the spring as the new growth comes out. I hope this helps solve your problem, but you have you work cut out for you. Good Luck.
