QuestionWe have some carrotwood trees which are approximately 20 years old. Some of them look like they are weeping and have a red sap substance dripping down trunk. Any ideas?
AnswerSap weeping from any tree is not a good sign. Try to see if the sap is coming from a wound caused by woodpeckers. If there are small holes aligned in a straight line around the trunk, then it is woodpeckers. Larger holes could be caused by other tree borers. There could also be other injury such as wind or even lawn mower or weedeater if on the lower trunk. There are also bacterial diseases that cause weeping. If possible, smell of the sap and see if it smells like whiskey. If it does, then it is bacterial ooze. There may also be bees and flies around the sap. Try to determine where the sap is coming from and respond back. Although there is not much that can be done, I do have a trick or two that you can try.
