QuestionI have noticed white spots slightly raised on the entire bark of my sunsation magnolia tree. Planted last fall it seemed to grow well right away. The weather was warm for an unusually long time in Ohio last fall. Now, the growth is different and seems slow to me but I am definitely no expert. Is ther reason for concern and if so what can be done? I may be able to obtain a replacement from the nursery if it is very serious. Thank you.
AnswerWhat you describe may be lichens or parasitic algae. Neither of these organisms poses a threat to your tree and no action is necessary on your part. Magnolias do grow slow, so expect a flush of new growth and then nothing for the rest of the year. In the fall and possibly next spring the tree will drop a few leaves before putting on new growth again. Magnolias are semi-evergreen and this is normal. Good Luck.
