QuestionSeveral of my JPs died over the winter and I noticed that the bark is coming off of their trunks. There seems to be a yellowish/brownish mold or something under the dried bark. Can you help me? I have about six others and I don't want to lose them.
AnswerBark coming off of the trunk is NOT a good sign. The trees could be suffering from Oak Root Rot, a fungal disease that kills trees and woody shrubs. There is no control. The fungus spreads by root grafts, or diseased roots growing over healthy roots. If the other trees and some distance away where their roots will no grow together they should be fine. There is also the possibility of insects. Check under the dead bark for any kind of bug. If there is mulch around the trees, make sure it is not piled too high around the base as this will cause trunk rot. I hope some of this info helps you figure out the problem. Good Luck.
