QuestionI bought 6 young azaleas this week. Yesterday I noticed a little white powder on the stems of two of the plants. To-day the plants are covered in this white substance that rubs off. I am assuming it is powdery mildew? I washed both plants and sprayed them with damp off and water.
Can you tell me what the disease is, and how to cure it? I can take them back to the nursery . They are guaranteed.
What would you suggest. I have never grown them before. Thanks , Diane
AnswerThe problem is either mealy bugs or scale insects. Take those back to Home Depot and get a new set of plants. You can control the scale easily, but why when it is their problem with your warranty, get a new set of plants to replant. Then go into their insecticide department and buy Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide. Follow label instructions and treat about two weeks after the new plants are set in. The chemical will control most insects and protect the plants for up to 8 months. Good Luck.
