QuestionI have 3 spider plants that have developed a sticky substance on their foliage. It looks like there is some sort of egg on the sticky parts of the foliage too. How do I get rid of it? I am concerned that it could spread to my other plants!?
If you could suggest something to get rid of these please do!
Thanks!
AnswerI can definitely answer your question. The plants have an insect such as aphids of scale. I would think scale if they are sort of oval and are appressed closely to the leaf. They can be any color from white to black or brown to red. They can be scraped off with your fingernail. The insects are stationary and do not move while they are feeding. During the feeding process they secrete a sugary substance called honeydew. This is the sticky substance you are seeing. The honeydew may grow a black mold called sooty mold. The mold is not harmful to the plant and will eventually disappear if the insects are controlled. If these are inside houseplants, you can treat the insects in one of two ways. If you are a patient person, you can use heavy mineral oil and a q-tip and coat each bug. This will suffocate them. If thats not your cup of tea, you can go buy Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide at one of the big box stores. This product is mixed with water and poured on the soil. It is then taken up systemically by the plant and will kill the bugs in about 1-2 weeks. It will keep bugs off the plants for 6-8 months. You do need to control these insects as they will move to other plants nearby and can even kill plants if left untreated. I hope this solves your problem Good Luck.
