QuestionI have a perfectly healthy looking lemon tree but many (but not all) of the fruits have a black spot on the bllom end as they ripen. What can I do to prevent this?
Thanks!
AnswerI am not a lemon expert by any means. However, it sounds like you are describing blossom end rot, which is caused by a calcium deficiency. If the trees are in pots I would say this is the problem. This problem is caused by not only a lack of calcium moving from the leaves into the fruit but is usually an uneven watering regime that causes the calcium to not move the way it should in the plant. If the tree is in the ground, the same thing applies. Go to a garden center and buy some calcium nitrate in a 2 lb bag. I need to know the size of the tree to recommend a rate, so please respond back with that info. In the meantime, make sure that the tree receives equal water all the time. Do not let it go dry and then wet, dry and then wet. This is what causes the problem. Waiting for your response.
