QuestionI have a 4" diameter tree that the bark is cracking and peeling off, What would cause this problem?
AnswerHi William,
I wouldn't be so concerned about the bark cracking and peeling unless you see other problems such as "oozing" from the trunk, etc. As a tree grows, the bark must expand as the trunk grows. It is quite normal for the bark to crack and peel off. As a matter of fact, there are some species (shag bark hickory, for example) that are prized for this characteristic.
As a precaution, examine your tree carefully for any signs of insect infestation or darkening "wet" spots on the trunk. Each of these can indicate an abnormal physiology. Otherwise, if the tree looks healthy, this is most likely a temporary "growing pain".
