Miniature houseplant orange tree

Question
QUESTION: Last spring I bought a little orange tree in Florida.  I potted it and kept it outside all summer. Since bringing it indoors it has developed tiny little welbs where the new leaves are beginning. These leaves sort of curl up and fall off easily. They're also very little. Help!

ANSWER: It sounds like a spider mite problem, since there is webbing involved.  The spider mites are almost too small to see with the naked eye.  But they will suck the juice out of the leaves and cause them to dry up and fall off.  They will also kill the tree if not controlled.  A Safer Insecticidal Soap may kill the critters.  If you want to use something stronger, you can use Sevin insecticide.  Let me know if this is not the case.  Good Luck.

QUESTION: I also have a large bay leaf plant that has a huge problem with scale.  I have tried several different things to get rid of it, but every time I think I have been successful, it comes back again. What do you suggest?  Thanks.

Answer
My suggestion is to get a Q-tip and some heavy mineral oil and rub onto the stems with the scale on them.  This should kill them.  The problem with scale is that the oval structures you see are the females with eggs underneath.  So-- when you kill the females there are still babies coming out that you need to control as well.  Try the mineral oil for several treatments and see how successful you are.  Good Luck.
