peach and apple trunks

Question
My peach and apple trees have some sort of problem with the trunks. The bark
has split and peeled away, sap is oozing and it looks like the wood is rotting. I
have photos I can send but I don't see an option to attach files. I live in the
Sacramento area.

Answer
What you describe is most likely a bacterial infection.  See if the sap and ooze smells like alcohol.  If so, that is what the problem is.  Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to cure the trees.  Dig into the tree with a pocket knife and see how deep it goes.  If it is superficial, you may can scrape out the infected area. Then I would try and treat with Fire Blight Spray made by Fertilome.  This product contains streptomycin antibiotic.  It may kill the bacteria. Most likely, some damage or injury, such as a lawn mower, weed eater of bushhog has hit the tree.  The trees may live a long time with this condition and then they may die this summer.  It is hard to say.  Contact me again with the results of your investigation.
