QuestionI have a hybrid willow in it's first year grown from a root. It has grown 5 feet tall. It was hit by some weed and feed that blew on it, I guess. The leaves fell off but it is still standing tall. How will I know if it is going to make it? It is not September 2007. I did flush the plant and the area with water a couple of times; but maybe not soon enough.
AnswerStart near the end of a upper branch and scrape a little of the bark off and if the color under the bark is green then the branch is still alive at this point on the branch. If the color is brown not green the the branch is dead at this point on the branch. If brown continue down the branch at intervals scraping bark off until you find green. Try other branches until you find green. If there is green wait until next spring and see where the new growth of leaves bud out and prune the dead off. The weed and feed contains a herbicide and should never be used on lawns that have trees in them, instead use a regular fertilizer and spray the weeds with a herbicide for lawns.
