holly trouble

Question
I also live in NJ and have the same problem with my Hollys. I have nine small holly shrubs located throughout my yard. There is a little bit of new growth on them. During the winter I noticed a lot of the branches looked dead. Now I been seeing a lot of the leaves turning light then dark brown and the stems/branches die off and become brittle. I've been told that it is only winter damage from ice storms but I fear it is something more serious. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mike,

This is most likely winter damage.  To confirm this, the tips and edges of the leaves will appear brown first (from freeze), then the leaves will become very brittle.  We have had some severe ice storms here this winter also, so I see that a lot around my neighborhood.

It is also good to check to see that you have new growth.  Branches that have not sent out new growth should be pruned out as they may harbor fungal pathogens.  If you must trim extensively, use some pruning wax or sealer to cover the cut surfaces.
