juniper and cedar disease

Question
I have noticed a white cottony substance about the size of a cue tip at the v joint on a juniper bush and some cedars.
What is this and how do I treat it?

Answer
Hi Carol,

It is hard to tell with so little information.  It could be many things including webs of small beneficial spiders.  Examine the substance closely to notice any structures that would indicate that it is spider-related.  If so, then leave them alone as most spiders eat the more destructive insects.

Nature has a way of controlling insect populations with natural predators.  If these small cottony substances are related to other insects such as mealybugs, then the natural predators should keep them in check.

Keep watch on these substances to note any insects that are near the substance.  Photos would be a great help.

Sorry I cannot be more specific.
