army worms

Question
Hello!  Is there a safe, natural way to eliminate army worms in newly laid sod?  We have a small dog and are worried about using Sevin, etc.  Will the sod come back after treatmant?  Thanks so much!  Debbie

Answer
There are several safe insecticide that will control armyworms but I am not sure what you might mean by "natural way". The Pyrethroid componds are made from plant material or Orthene Turf, Tree and Ornamental is an "chemical" insecticide that can be used in place of sevin. Sevin is a safe product-in fact it is used as a spray on digs for fleas. If your concern is the dogs getting on the wet lawn after the spray it would be best to keep it off until the grass dries. Which ever one you select make sure you follow the directions on the product and use plenty of water not just a fine spray. Here is a web link to all the products labled for arnyworm control. If you have concerns I would suggest you call a local pset control company and let them pick the product that will not be a problem with your dog. http://entomology.unl.edu/turfent/products.htm
