QuestionMy sister has a umbrella plant, and all the new growth is shriveling up and dying? What is wrong with the plant, this is the second one she had and its doing the same thing as the first.
AnswerDear Emily, It sounds like the umbrella plant is not getting enough water, but let me go over the requirements for this plant and perhaps you will be able to determine what the plant is lacking. I notice that you live in Canada, so I am assuming that you are growing this plant indoors. It should be kept over 50 degrees Fahrenheit. It also needs a pretty good amount of light, so I would grow it in a window or under a grow light. While it doesn't usually grow in full sun outdoors, it still requires a good amount of light. Also when watering, be sure to drench the plant thoroughly and then wait until the soil feels dry for the top inch or so before watering again. Be sure to empty any run-off water out of any saucer or tray underneath the plant because that can lead to rot and many other problems. Now, if all these things are taken care of, then you might suspect an insect problem. To check for spider mites, take one of the leaves and rap it sharply a few times over a white sheet of paper. If anything falls off, and you see it moving, then you have spider mites. To get rid of this, as well as most other pests, you could spray the plant with NEEM. NEEM is an organic chemical which is effective in treating insects, mites and diseases, so it's great when you are not sure what the problem is. If you need to spray, spray the plant thoroughly making sure to especially get the underside of leaves. I hope this information helps, but be sure to write back if you need more assistance. Good luck, Melissa
