norway spruce

Question
I live in Carmel, Indiana (near Indianapolis) and I have a couple
of mature norway spruce trees (30'-40' tall) that are dropping a
significant amount of needles this winter.  This is unlike normal
needle drop I've experienced with Blue Spruce or White Pine.
This kind of drop is more like a 3 to 4 inch twig of needles
falling in a clump. I've seen no damaged like a gall or evidence
of pest damage.  The needles are still green and pliable- no
browning or discoloration, almost looks like it was just been
pulled off the limb.  Last fall was pretty dry and I'm wondering if
this is a natural response to that, or maybe another issue at hand.
Thanks for the help.

Answer
It is hard to say what the problem is with out seeing the tree. I suggest you contact Phil Marshall,Insect and Disease Specialist with the Indiana Department of Forestry and he should be able to help. Phil is my counterpart in Indiana and knows the local pest problems in Indiana. His email is [email protected]  and phone # is (812) 358-3621
