QuestionWhy are some many foresters, such as yourself, intent on reducing deer numbers to such low levels? Lower than they would be under natural conditions.
AnswerYou have somewhere in your past been mis-led as to what is good deer habitat and how foret management plays a key role in maintaning the habitat. Sound forest management will increase the food supply for deer and IF the population is not over hunted will increase the number of deer. IF you were to let a forest grow until all the trees were say over 100 years old and never been cut the the forest floor would be shaded and there would be no forage for the deer to eat. Sure there maybe acorns (if the trees were oaks) but acorn crops are not every year and do not last all year. Here is a web link to a site about manageing derr habitat called A Landowner's Guide to Wildlife Abundance through Forestry . Please read it and if you still have questions contact your local State Game and Fish and/or State Forester and ask about your local area and what is being done there. http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/forestry/420-138/420-138.html#L1
I for one Forester am a hunter and manage the land to maximize the income from timber and at the same time manage the deer population for income and the pleasure of seeing and hunting whitetail deer.
