QuestionI live in Indiana near Louisville Ky. Six years ago I added a tulip tree to my lawn. Last year it started to bloom and was beautiful. This spring I spotted holes in the bottom few inches of the tree. Some research leads me to believe it is root collar bower(euzophera ostricolorella)but that research also told me my tree is doomed. Any way to save it? Thank you.
AnswerYou are more than likely correct-root collar Borer would be my guess. I would reccommend you spray the effected area of the trunk of the tree and the at ground level part of the trunk with an insecticide called Onyx--Mix at the rate of .25 fl. oz of the product in 1 gallon of water--you should about 1-4 gallons of this solution per tree. The bark should be throughly wet. Onyx not only kills the borer but also will prevent the attack if sprayed every three months during the spring and summer.
