Dry Rot

Question
I have a fir free in my yard and a friend said the tree was suffering from 'dry rot'  What is it, Jim, and how can I control it?  Or get rid of it. Thanks

Answer
I do not think your trree has what is commonly called "dry rot". The enter part of a tree (woody part) is not alive and if the outer bark layer is damaged fungi can enter the wood and cause rot to infect the wood. This has the appearance of the wood being rotten (maybe dry rot like). As long as the foliage of the tree is thick and green then the tree is healthy and I would not bother with the inside of the tree trunk. The only thing that can happen is over time (10-20+ years) the tree trink can be come hollow. As long as the out side of the trunk is solid there is no danger ( the only dange of a servely hollowed tree is it breaking off). There is no need to control the area of "rot" since it really is not a problem to th tree's health.
