QuestionWe have two white dogwoods that seem to have developed anthracnose this year. They put on flowers and immediately the flowers had purple spots and dried up. What to do?
Also, our Holly shrubs have a black covering on the tops of the leaves, looks like they are coated with coal dust but it won't wash off. I used daconil and tried a soapy solution, what next?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
AnswerSounds like the dogwood has dogwood anthracnose. Here is a good site that gives ID and control of dogwood anthracnose.http://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/howtos/ht_dogwd/ht_dog.htm
The other on the Holly sounds like aphids. Aphids secrete a juice (honeydew) and a fungus usually black will grow on the honeydew. Control the aphids and the black will go away. Check with your local nursery on a control for aphids.
