Questioni have a shrub with a white residue on the leaves. this same residue caused me to remove 2 shurbs last year. these shrubs are leafy wtih leaves 1" wide and 2" long. they stay on all year. the ones last year were silver with green fringes and the shrub this year is a different type (all green),i thought this disease may have been specific to only one type. sorry i do not know the names of the shrubs. i live in southern Tn. would a fungicide help? i have no idea what else to tell you. have a great day
AnswerHi Kelly
It is one of possibly two problems. If the residue is just a powdery white on the surface of the leaf, it is powdery mildew and a fungicide will help with the problem. If the white is more like little bumps on the leaves and branches then it is a scale insect and you will have to apply dormant oil in the spring before the new growth starts and then apply insecticidal soap in June (two applications, 10 days apart). this will get rid of the scale insect if it is done for a couple of years.
Just by what you are describing, I have a feeling the problem is called Euonymus Scale and the plant is Euonymus. If you type in Euonymus scale insect into www.google.com you should fine a website or two with some pictures of this problem. HOPE THIS HELPS. JOHN
