QuestionI live in east central Florida. I have a mature King Sago Palm that develops a problem each time new palm frawns grow. Shortly after growing full length some of the frawns (I think I'm spelling it right) develop a mottled yellow color and start to brown and die. This has been happening for years and occurs only on one side of the tree, which is the side that has received direct water for my sprinkler system for years. Last year I shut off that particular sprinkler nozzle, but the tree still has the same problem.
AnswerSago palms do best as container plants, but if this one is in the ground you are right to control the amount of water it gets. They like to dry out almost completely before being watered. If it is in a container, never let water sit in a drip tray after watering.
About every three months, apply a liquid iron supplement according to the package instructions, don't overdo it. In fact less is more in this case. Between these feedings, apply a liquid fertilizer for houseplants, that contains only a trace of nitrogen, less than 10% if possible. Again less is more. If this is planted in the ground, try to avoid it when fertilizing surrounding plants. Mix a gallon of each of these supplements when the time comes around, and slowly add it completely around the entire plant.
