Question
maple tree maple tree
I looked out my window yesterday and saw this in my maple tree does anyone know what it is. it looks like califlower
AnswerSteven:
This is a fungus fruiting structure called a conk or sporophore. It is produced by a particular fungus usually associated with internal decay of the heartwood of the tree. There is a good chance that your tree has some level of decay inside . This decay cannot be reversed. If the tree is growing vigorously, it may be able to "tolerate" this decay process for some time. Watch the tree for the development of dead branches in the canopy. Ultimately this decay may weaken the structure of the tree causing it to fail- usually during a storm. If the tree may potentially pose a hazard to persons or property, removal may be the best option.
