Question
male mulberry
I have the Male Mulberry in Southern AZ. that is cracking a bit vertically. My next question is about trimming the tree. I had our local tree trimming guy come look at it and he suggested thinning it and removing the dead growth. Do you think this is a good idea? Or should I water for a few months and see if the cracks heal? What is the best time of year to have this tree trimmed if you think its a good idea? Thank you so much for your Help. Mat
AnswerDear Mat, I do think that trimming the tree to remove any dead wood would be a good idea. Increasing the water will help the tree to recover, and the cracks can eventually heal over, but if the tree is carrying extra dead wood weight, that will slow down the recovery process. You could do it now or in a few months. Ideally, you should wait until the leaves are at least turning because then the sap isn't running as hard and it is easier for the tree to recover when it isn't 'leaking' as much. Cut dead branches all the way back. It is best if you first make a cut a few feet out, cutting the branch off, then make another cut to make it flush with the tree. Those "stubs" don't do the tree any good. I would plan on trimming out all the dead wood within the next few months, sealing with prune paint, and then your tree should be in great shape. Melissa
