QuestionI live in Southeast Texas and have some wonderful snake plants in pots at my front door outside. I have noticed in the past month that they have started to get this white fuzzy mold on some of the leaves. They turn brown on the end and the leaves end up dying. Not sure if its a mealy bug infestation or mold or what. The white stuff does wipe off. I have sprayed my plants with a detergent soap spray and cut the dead or worse looking leaves off the plan in hopes of killing whatever it is.
AnswerDear Jim, It does indeed sound like you have a mealybug and/or other scale infestation. A better way to kill mealybug is to spray with a lightweight horticultural oil. SunSpray is a good one, or you could also spray with one of the biorganic oils. These work by smothering and are especially effective on scale, and mealybug is a type of scale. I would plan on spraying once a week for several weeks and it will get rid of the bugs. On another note, it also sounds like your sansievera are becoming too wet. Be sure to keep them on the dry side because they prefer that environment, and if you keep them crowded in a pot, they will bloom for you in the cooler months. Be sure to trim off any bad foliage, and if you continue to find brown ends on the leaves, I would also spray with a fungicide, probably a systemic one containing proprioconozole, which is a pretty good fungicide. You may have been getting a lot more wet weather this summer than usual (I also live in Texas) so try to avoid keeping the plants too wet. I hope this information helps. Good luck, Melissa
