QuestionIs there some sticky stuff or something to put on the post that holds my hummingbird feeder to prevent ants from climbing up and getting to it?
AnswerDear Doris, I think that if you spray the post with WD-40 then it should prevent the ants from climbing up. However, you will have to spray fairly frequently to keep the post slippery. Other methods of control you can use would be to keep the feeder slightly under filled to prevent it from spilling over too much. Also, I would lay out granules or spray the area with Spinosad, an organic compound which seems to be very effective in controlling ants. Sometimes the hummingbirds just spill some of the feeder liquid out, so it is difficult to control them completely, but the WD-40 and the Spinosad should do a pretty good job. Otherwise, I also make it a point to spray down the area underneath the feeder about every week. It prevents the buildup of sugar which attracts the ants. I hope this information helps. Good luck, Melissa
