QuestionOur tree is 5 years old. Last August it lost all it's leaves, this spring it was very slow to bud and only 1/2 the tree has leaves. New growth show leaves curling up and turning black.

There may be several possibilities here. It would be best if someone could make a "house call" to see it in person. Look for the obvious things--- Examine the tree for any damage to the bark on the trunk, any digging close to the tree?, or any applications of chemicals sprayed directly on the tree or to the soil within the root system area. Look at the curled leaves closely for any signs of insects. If none of these turns up anything positive, it may be related to a harsh weather event such as temperature/moisture extremes sometime previously. Using your fingernail, try scratching the bark of a few smaller/flexible twigs near their ends. Look for green beneath. If none is visible and twigs snap off rather than bend,there may be terminal issue here. You may wish to get a professional, on site opinion from a certified arborist in your area. Check the phone book under tree services for folks qualified to examine your tree. Another idea is to visit your local garden center for a possible house call as well.
