african violets

Question
I have an african violet plant, mostly white with bits of green foliage, that was healthy and growing beautifully for years.  Now it is having trouble with the leaves.  A brown area appears in the middle of the leaf and ultimately the leaf dies. The plant has lost 75 percent of its foliage this way. I can't find any paraites but not the less it is dying. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Rose:

To get a better idea of your browning leaves, can you send me a photo of your plant that has those brown leaves on it?  Water fluctuations in the soil (too much or not enough) may be a factor or there could be a root rot.  You can look at the roots.  If you see any blackening, this may indicate a root rot.  You may ultimately consider replacement since you have lost 75% of the leaves. Be sure the new plant is in a well drained soil and avoid overwatering the soil and getting water on the foliage. Sometimes moving the plant to a different light can also bring on stress.  Another option is to carry your plant to your local nursery/garden center for their opinion.  Suggest that you carry it to someone who has had experience with these plants, rather than the big box stores and their garden center.  You may get a better explanation locally.

Regards

Steve
