QuestionQUESTION: I have a pin oak tree and one day I noticed that all the leaves are brown, and they are not falling from the tree. It seemed to happen overnight. I live in the San Joaquin Valley, California.
ANSWER: Hi Angie:
I will need a bit more information about your tree. How long has the tree been in the current location? Is it a mature tree or a newly planted one? If possible, can you send a photo showing a portion of the tree with the leaves attached?
Mature, well established trees don't normally brown "overnight". Sometimes we may not notice them until it is far along. I would look for some obvious possibilities like (1) any loss or damage to the bark on the main stem/trunk. (2) Any digging/excavation under or near the tree. (3) anything been sprayed on the tree or poured on the soil under the tree? Has the weather been unusual? Watering schedules etc?

QUESTION: The tree is about 5 years old. We have it on a drip system and the ground is moist at the trunk. The trunk has a little cracking at the base and some on the large branches. Nothing has been sprayed or poured under the tree. The weather is normal, but more windy.
AnswerAngie:
I am not sure of the significance of the cracks near the base. I would suspect that it may be appropriate for someone to see your tree "in person" to provide an more accurate assessment. You can contact the folks at your local county Agricultural Extension office to arrange for a visit. Another source maybe your local nursery/greenhouse or the business that planted it. Unfortunately, there can be so many variables that impact the health. You did mention the drip system- is there a chance it may be too wet here? If the soil stays too wet for long periods, this can be a stress factor also. In most cases, trees are watered well at planting, then watered as needed.
Again, suggest that you have someone make a "house call" to give you more details.
