Question
Japanese maple leaves
This year we transplanted a homegrown Japanese maple. Recently it developed yellowish slightly raised spots of various sizes on some leaves, especially around the edges of leaves. (The mother tree also has some spots, bot not as many as the younger tree.) Is this normal ?
We have attached (we hope)a photo of some of these leaves./Users/marie/Desktop/IMG_1734.jpg
AnswerJapanese Maple owners:
I do not recognize these areas on the leaves as a bona fide infectious disease, but rather an environmental issue, perhaps related to temperature or other external factor to the tree. Often when the leaves turn brown around the edges and is distributed rather uniformly on the tree, this may indicate root related stress such as lack of water from a previous point in time.
As a good general practice for trees, rake up and dispose of any fallen leaves during the late winter before the buds begin to swell in the spring. This practice can help reduce the incidence of many insect and disease problems the following spring.
