QuestionI have what looks to be a fungus on the under side of some leaves. They look the size of a piece of cooked rice, for lack of a better description and are white in color.
AnswerDear Tim, You have scale on your holly, a nonmoving insect which attaches to a plant and sucks out the juices. It is very common, but it is fairly easy to get rid of. You will need to spray with a horticultural oil (use SunSpray if you can find it) or you could spray with a biorganic oil. Be sure to spray heavily on the bottom of the leaves where the insects like to hide. Ordinary insecticides don't work on scale because of the protective cover, but the oil will smother them. You will know they are dead when a moderate stream of water dislodges them from the plant. You will need to spray 3 or 4 times about a week apart to effectively get rid of them. It is somewhat time-consuming, but this method will work. I hope this information is helpful. Write back if you have more questions. Melissa
