QuestionHi, my indoor ficus is planted in a pot and is oozing a sort of white /reddish sort of powdery substance
At the bottom where the drainage holes are situated. It looks rather gross yet the plant seems to be doing ok
Any thoughts on the problem?
Thank you
AnswerDear Julian, This is most likely a mushroom or puffball type of fungus, and for the most part it won't hurt your plant. However, it is never good to encourage fungus near a plant's root system and usually they will spread and lead to other problems. They also indicate that the soil is too wet. I would recommend using a soil drench of NEEM which is an organic substance that works as an insecticide, miticide and fungicide and is perfect for small gardens. Drench the soil with the NEEM and then let the soil dry out. You should also try removing the fungus growth near the affected drainage holes, or if it seems fairly severe then I would recommend repotting the tree with fresh dirt. If it has been several years since repotting, now would be a good time. In future, make sure to keep the plant out of any standing water in the tray beneath it, water thoroughly when watering, and then don't water until the plant starts to dry out. I hope this information helps. Write back if you have more questions. Melissa
