QuestionWe have a Yoshine cherry tree that was planted a month ago. The leaves have started turning brown on their edges and a few have curled closed. Is this a watering issue or something more serious and if so, what can we do about it? We are located in Oklahoma. Thank you.
AnswerSounds like either a water issue--too little or too much or possibly a planting problem. IF the soil is clay it maybe a problem with the hole planted in--the clay tends to form a under ground pot and hold water and if so the roots will drown in the standing water. Too much water or too little water will give the same wilting of the foliage. DO not water unless the soil around the tree is dry down about 3 inches. The water only once a week with 1 inch of water--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help the roots.
