colour change in camelias

Question
I have two camelias, one deep pink and one white. They are about 5 feet high and 3 feet wide and are planted 3 feet apart. Last year when I moved in, they flowered quite normally. This year I noticed on the white bush there was a branch with one flower deep pink and one white. Some of the other white flowers had pink splashes on them and one flower was exactly half pink and half white. Can you please tell me what is going on ?
Many thanks
Geraldine

Answer
Hi Geraldine,

I suspect that your camellia plants are grafted.  The branches that appear different may be coming from the rootstock, below the graft point.  So, the branches higher on the stem are the color of the grafted material and the other colors are lower branches, close to the bottom of the plant.  This would describe the symptoms that are describing.  IF you like the color, then leave the branch attached.  If you do not like it, then remove it by pruning.
