plant parasites

Question
I found tiny orange or red colored worm or larvae type parasites on my hibiscus plant recently.  what is it? can they kill my plants?

Answer
Dear Darlene, It sounds like a butterfly or moth has laid eggs on your hibiscus and now they have hatched.  As you've probably already noticed, they are eating the leaves and probably flowers of your plant.  They won't kill the plant, but they can severely stress it by stripping off the leaves.  The best way to get rid of them is to simply hand pick them off, but be sure to use gloves if they are "furry" or have any hairy spines as these carry poison and can be extremely painful.  Other controls you can use are to spray with Bacillus thurengensis, a botanical control for caterpillars, which should stop them from eating immediately and kill them within a few days.  You could also use spinosad or NEEM, or you could go with something stronger since this is not a food source plant, but the Bacillus or handpicking is probably the quickest and easiest way to go.  Good luck, Melissa
