TREE-- Korean Snow Pear

Question
Tree is about 6 years old. Last Year ends of a couple branches started dying. This spring whole branches seem dead and has progressed to others while other sections of tree appear healthy. Am afraid problem is progressing to other areas. Part of tree is in blossom.  Can I save the tree --What must I do to help?

Answer
Sounds like fire blight.  This is a common disease of ornamental pears. Here is a web link to a NY extension service page on Fire Blight.  http://www.nysipm.cornell.edu/factsheets/treefruit/diseases/fb/fb.asp
Yes the tree can be saved by pruning the dead wood out and treating with the copper mixture or Pear trees can also be treated with streptomycin. Apply the first spray as soon as the blossoms open. Repeat at four- to seven- day intervals as long as blossoms are present. The time between streptomycin application and fruit harvest must be a minimum of 50 days. Apply all chemicals according to directions on the label. Check with your local nursery/garden type store for these products.
