QuestionI have had my umbrella tree for 15 years. It has been in the same place but this winter it has started to die. The leaves are all falling off, I used to lose a few leaves when a new sprout would begin but this time, even the new sprout with 5 leaves only about 2 inches tall lost all but 1 leaf. Not sure what to do. Please help me save my plant.
AnswerDear Vondra, I assume that by an umbrella plant, you mean a schefflera. It sounds like your plant has gotten some rot or fungus and I'm not sure if it can be saved, but here is what I would do. First get some horticultural product containing NEEM. There are several on the market. Neem is an organic compound that is effective on insects, mites, and fungus and is perfect for home gardeners. I would also have some fresh soil on hand. You should probably replace the soil in the pot, and while the plant is out of the pot, you should check thoroughly for signs of rot or fungus. Any soft spots or discolored areas should be cut off. Make sure the pot is well scrubbed before putting the plant back in. Those white "rings" around the pot rim especially indicate a salt buildup and can kill a plant. After you get the pot replaced in the clean pot with fresh soil, spray the plant with Neem. This will kill any remaining fungus. Then fertilize it, water well, make sure it drains, and be sure to remove any water remaining in any saucer beneath the plant. This may help the plant, but sometimes a plant that has been around for years will suddenly start to die. If you can, make some cuttings from the plant and root them, and that way you will have at least a part of the original plant living, and that part should be problem free. I hope these suggestions help. Good luck, Melissa
