Question-How common is gray mold?
-How many people get sick from gray mold?
-Is gray mold deadly?
AnswerGray mold disease of strawberry is caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea. It is extremely common and can be found almost anywhere strawberries are grown.
Most plant pathogens do not have any health effects on humans. I have not found any reports where this fungus produces toxins that would cause problems for humans. This type of fungus is an abundant spore producer under the right conditions (humid, moderate temperatures). For individuals that are sensitive to molds (mold spore allergies), they may experience hay fever/allergic type symptoms. In rare instances, usually on those that are immunocompromised, humans can develop problems if the spores contact the eyes and cause an infection. If a person is extremely sensitive to Botrytis cinerea, they can develop a respiratory problem similar to pneumonia. I do not know how common these infections are, but they are more likely to be experienced by agricultural workers or those in underdeveloped countries.
If symptoms of these problems are experienced, a doctor should be consulted. In most cases, these are treatable problems and delaying treatment increases the likelihood of long term problems.
